Miscellaneous Information:

Doug was born in New York City in 1972 and grew up in Los Angeles, CA. After earning his FAA Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certification from the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK he joined the United States Navy, where he served aboard various warships and was stationed in Japan. After 24 years of active service he retired in 2016 and is currently employed as an Electronics Technician with the Dept. of Defense in San Diego, where he lives with his wife and four children.

Doug was brought up in the Baptist tradition. Over the years his beliefs evolved into agnostic atheism, but it wasn’t until his mid-thirties that he stumbled on Humanism, which provided the missing piece that changed his outlook on life and provided a solid base for his ethical worldview.

Doug has served as the San Diego affiliate for the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) and he has spearheaded both sea- and shore-based Humanist initiatives in support of military members and families, and continues to do so as a Humanist Celebrant with the Humanist Society. The quality of life of secular servicemembers being a primary concern of his, he has traveled to both Annapolis, MD and San Antonio, TX to speak to Navy Midshipmen and Air Force Basic Trainees about the status of Humanism in the Armed Forces.

Doug enjoys talking with people about their worldviews, politics, the beach, and traveling with his family. He holds an AA in Liberal Arts (Nuclear Science Focus) and is pursuing a BA in Sociology.
